Signs of an infestation
- Small, itchy bites in clusters or a line on exposed skin, usually noticed after sleeping.
- Rust-coloured blood spots and tiny dark excrement dots on sheets, mattress seams and nearby furniture.
- Pinhead-sized pale eggs and shed skins in seams and crevices, and a sweet, musty smell where infestations are heavy.
Where to check
- Mattress seams and piping, bed frames and headboards, and the seams of sofas and upholstered furniture.
- Bites alone are unreliable - some people react within hours, others not for up to two weeks (or not at all) - so always look for the physical signs.
