How fumigation works
- Fumigation releases a gas under sealed conditions, so it penetrates throughout a space or stack and eradicates pests at every life-cycle stage - from egg to adult.
- The time 'under gas' is the exposure period - around eight days at ambient temperatures - and the treatment is non-tainting, leaving no pesticide residue on the commodity.
- Dosage and exposure time are matched to the commodity, temperature and target pest; the area is then ventilated and confirmed safe before re-entry.
Compliance & certification
- ISPM 15 is the international phytosanitary standard regulating wood packaging in global trade, to stop pests crossing borders.
- Phosphine is widely used for stored goods because it penetrates bulk commodities thoroughly and leaves no residue.
